Studying subjects at the heart of the communications and media industries requires access to a range of facilities. As a Media and Communications student, you can enjoy the use of radio and TV studios, photography studios, darkrooms and production rooms, as well as access to a range of digital video and audio editing equipment. Communal area in the Professor Stuart Hall Building

Start your day off right by grabbing a hot drink in our vegan cafe, Peak Street Café, which sells hot and cold food and drinks. This is the newest of our academic buildings, and was named after the prominent sociologist Stuart Hall. It is home to the Department of Media, Communications and Cultural Studies, the Institute of Management (IMS), and the Institute for Creative and Cultural Entrepreneurship (ICCE), so many of your lectures and seminars are likely to be here.

Edit Suite

Edit suites

You’ve got a couple of hours before your first seminar, so why not head over to your allocated edit suite and make some headway on your latest film (being very careful not to spill your coffee anywhere!). This is where you’ll be able to use a suite of industry-standard editing software and equipment, which gives you hands-on experience with high-end digital formats and post-production workflows, such as offline/online editing, picture grading, and VFX.

Radio Studio

Radio studio

As a media student, you may also have access to the radio studios (in the same hallway as the video edit suites – convenient!) These contain professional-grade broadcast and audio post-production equipment, which you can use to record, edit, and refine your radio packages. Studios are equipped with computers, radio mics, and control surfaces, as well as a host of audio post-production software, including Adobe Audition.

Darkroom

Darkrooms

You may have had enough of audio and moving images after this morning. Head down to the lower ground floor of the Professor Stuart Hall Building and find the photography darkrooms nestled in the back of the building. You can use these facilities to learn and tweak your own film development techniques. Providing equipment and supplies for both colour, and black and white development, these facilities will allow you to hone your photography skills.

After a long day of creating, tweaking, and refining, it’s time to head home. Each of our halls is unique, giving you plenty of choice to find somewhere that suits you.
